Welcome
A respect for intellectual freedom is the cornerstone of the Virginia Beach Friends School Library. The Library Program is founded on a love of reading and literacy. Because formal schooling is just one stage of life, the goal of the Program is to encourage students to be independent users of information and life-long learners. The facility supports the curricular needs of the school by offering a wide range of literature and information resources, accessible through the online catalog. The collection contains over 23,000 books and multi-media materials supporting students from pre-school through grade 12. Student computers and wireless access are available.
The Library offers a warm and welcoming environment that encourages use by students of all ages. The Library maintains an open access policy throughout the school day. All students participate in school-wide reading programs appropriate to their particular age group. In addition, starting in Cottage and continuing through 8th grade, students participate in scheduled library visits. Students are exposed to a range of literature and genres and are encouraged to make independent reading choices. Students in the Upper Schools visit the library on a flexible schedule. A variety of online resources are available for student use. Information literacy instruction includes direct, collaborative, and individual lessons for all students. Research processes and skills as well as information seeking and evaluation techniques are stressed, preparing students for the challenges they will encounter as they move to an advanced academic or professional career.
