Art for Art’s Sake

September 2011

Join us for an evening of art, music and more at the….”ART FOR ART’S SAKE” Silent Art Auction at the First Colonial Inn in Virginia Beach.

This fabulous charity event will be held on Saturday, October 8th from 6-9pm–so book your babysitter now!  Original pieces of art will go to the highest bidder–but everybody wins at this event–all money raised will go to enhance and expand the art, music and drama programs at Virginia Beach Friends School.

So get ready for a night of dress-up, meeting great people, and the chance to take home beautiful artwork– all while supporting our school.

Wine and other refreshments will be served throughout the evening.  Tickets go on sale soon.

If you have questions about the auction or if you know someone who’d like to donate a piece of original art to the event, please contact Megan Murphy at: TMegan@friends-school.org

We hope everyone stayed safe and weathered Hurricane Irene with a minimum amount of damage.  Unfortunately the school did not escape entirely unscathed.  Repairs must be completed prior to the start of school.  In addition, some of our families and those in the military evacuated the area and will be returning during the course of the next few days.

As a result, the first day of school will be delayed until Wednesday, August 31st.  I do apologize for any inconvenience but our first priority is the safety and well being of all members of our community.  Staff will be on campus Monday and Tuesday so please call us at 428-7534 if you have any questions.

Regards,

Linda S. , Head of School

The new family orientation scheduled for Monday evening has been cancelled due to inclement weather.  This meeting will be rescheduled and new families will be advised of the new date and time.

Thanks for your understanding.  Please stay safe this weekend.

School Closing Policy

August 2011

School remains scheduled to commence on Tuesday, August 30th.  However, as the Hurricane Irene approaches, it is a good idea to be familiar with school policy.  Should it be necessary to close school for the day due to inclement weather or local conditions, announcements will be made on WTKR TV 3, Wavy  TV 10, and WVEC  TV 13.  You should also be notified by the automated telephone system.  If possible, an announcement will be posted on facebook and our school website.  In all cases of inclement weather, parents should assess road conditions in their own areas to determine if it is safe to drive.

Hurricane Preparation

August 2011

Currently, school is scheduled to start on August 30th as planned.  However please monitor your local television and radio stations for announcements.  The website will continue to be updated contingent on power availability.

However, the first rule is to be safe!  If for any reason you do not feel comfortable or able to attend due to the storm we understand.  Our students travel from diverse areas of Hampton Roads and each situation is different.

Students should continue to finish up their summer reading assignments and be ready to hit the ground running on Tuesday.  We hope they are looking forward to returning as much as we are looking forward to seeing them!

Thanks to everyone who made the inaugural Friends School Summer Blood Drive a great success.  Summer is traditionally a time when blood supplies dwindle, making your contribution even more valuable.  Over 26 pints were donated, the magic show was wonderful and the children had a great time making art.  At the other end of the campus Bobby’s Birthday Bash was a hit with everyone – and the cake was delicious.  We can’t wait ’til next year to do it again!

Come to Virginia Beach Friends School on Friday July 29th and help your community!  The Red Cross will be conducting a Blood Drive in the Gym from 11:30 AM to 4:30 PM.  Pre-registration for blood donation is encouraged at http://bit.ly/FriendsGive

Supervised activities including art, games and movies, will be available to entertain children while their parents  give. Parents can relax while receiving a 15 minute chair massage, courtesy of Essential Wellness (http://www.vabeachwellness.com/).  Reservations recommended – call 757-428-7534.

Special guest MAGICIAN ROB WESTCOTT (http://www.robwestcottmagic.com/) will perform at 3:30 PM.

Virginia Beach Friends School and the VIRGINIA BEACH SPCA care deeply about the welfare of our four-legged friends.  Meet pets available for adoption.  Help the shelter by donating pet food for the animals.

While you’re here, want to learn more about Virginia Beach Friends School?  Join us for an INFORMAL OPEN HOUSE and take a tour of our beautiful campus anytime between 11:30 AM and 4:30 PM.  Start in the library and celebrate TEACHER BOBBY’S BIRTHDAY from 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM in the library.  Have some birthday cake while you’re here. Teacher Bobby is an African Gray Parrot and a real character

Virginia Beach Friends School is located at 1537 Laskin Road, in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach.  Contact Jacquie Whitt at 428-7534, tjacquie@friends-school.org.

Dear Friends,

Our next meeting in “Planning the Next Steps” will be on Wednesday, June 29th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Wilson Center.

Patricia Swan will be facilitating this working meeting which will utilize SWOT analysis developed at the June 12th meeting.  Committees and partnerships will be formed to develop a rough outline of a Strategic Plan to move forward.

It is a meeting for people who have time, skills or other resources to donate.  From this meeting, committees with their leaders will work to develop Action Plans for their specific area.  This will include the “what,” “who,” “cost,” and time-lines for completion.  Again this will be a working meeting to continue our forward momentum.  We need your voice, your skills, and your energy to jump into specific areas requiring expertise, so please join us.

Warmly,

Linda Smith, Clerk of School Committee

The School Committee of Virginia Beach Friends School is pleased to announce that Linda Serrette, current Acting Head, has accepted the position as Head of School for the 2011-2012 academic year.  During her career Linda has taught in the classroom at VBFS, served as an Assistant Head for almost two years, and, for the last few months, as Acting Head of School.  Please join us in congratulating her and extending our support as she continues to provide outstanding leadership.
